Masala Baked Beans

I recently contributed to a soon to be published anthology and when I reminisced about my younger days and where I grew up. This recipe stuck out like a fish bone in a boned piece of hake.

I just had to share it.

Woolies now has crushed chilies in store so if you don’t have masala in your fridge like I do, then it can be made with the that. You can click on the button below for my homemade masala recipe if you have time and want to take a stab at making your own chili paste.

This meal is the only thing I really knew how to cook when I left East London to study in Durban. I made it often and as a working girl in Johannesburg when money was tight, this meal saved me. Enjoy it with bread or rotli and you’re sure to have a great meal.

Ingredients

1 tbsp ghee/oil

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 tsp jeera powder

1 tsp green masala

1/2 tsp salt

1 can baked beans

Method

  1. Heat ghee in a large pan and add baked beans.

  2. Mix in turmeric and masala.

  3. Add salt and when the baked beans sauce thickens, sprinkle with jeera and serve hot with rotli.
