Dhall With Carrot and Sweet Potato Balls

This is probably a very unusual thing to eat and I bet you’re wondering why I even made it. The truth is I was very lazy to go to the store after an exhausting work weekend.

And all I had in my fridge yesterday was salad greens, a bag of carrots and a lonely sweet potato. So I decided to reach for my stash of frozen dhall and take a stab at making a little vegetable croquette-looking ball. I also added 2 tbsp of pea protein in this recipe.

Did you know: ‘Pea Protein Isolate is a protein powder derived from split yellow peas and has a mild, pea flavour. It is a power-packed protein supplement that works to help improve muscle recovery, boost strength and endurance and reduce inflammation.’ - Health Connection Pea Protein Isolate

Carrot and Sweet Potato balls

Ingredients

3 large carrots

1 medium sized sweet potato

2 eggs

2 tbsp protein powder (you can get this in the healthy isle from Pick n Pay)

2 tbsp chickpea flour

1 tbsp of diced garlic

1tsp garlic powder

1 tsp salt

1 tsp Italian Herbs or Thyme

1 tsp pepper

1 tsp chillie flakes

Method

  1. Grate carrots and sweet potato. Remove any excess liquid from the vegetables by putting it in a cloth and giving it a good squeeze.

  2. Add eggs, protein powder, chickpea flour, salt, pepper, herbs and chillie flakes and garlic powder. Mix well.

  3. On a baking sheet, grease with oil or spray it with spray-and cook. Drop 1 tbsp sized balls which you’ve rolled with your hand on there.

  4. Bake in a hot oven at 150 degrees for 1/2 hour.

Dhall Recipe

  1. Soak a small bag (500g) of oil dhall for 10 minutes, rinse and boil for 1 hour.

  2. In a seperate pot, make a tomato chutney by frying 1 onion with 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1tsp jeera, 4 red chillies, curry leaves, 2 pepper cloves, 1 tsp tumeric and 4 tsp chillie powder. Add 3-4 large tomatoes and let it simmer for about 10 minutes on a medium heat.

  3. Add this mixture to your dhall and let it simmer for another 20 minutes on a very low heat.

Drop your carrot balls into you dhall or pour dhall over them. Whichever way you eat this, it’s delicious.

You can use coriander and fine coconut to garnish.

ps. You can also fry the carrot and potato mixture like a pattie and have it plain if you like. However, don’t try boiling otherwise you’ll have carrots floating everywhere.
